November 14, 2004 -- As we predicted, the 'Bad Girlz' craze started by Abigail Vona is gaining momentum. The latest addition: "Shut the Door"
by Amanda Marquit, being published by St. Martin's in January. Though
not technically a memoir, Marquit began writing this "shocking" tale of
"teens taking risks" when she was 14 and got a book deal when she was
16.
You can always tell when a publisher is trying to cash in on a
girl-writer’s sluttiness: Vanity Fair shows Melissa P. lounging on her
bed under an artistic nude; Marquit’s cover shows what we assume to be
her main character lolling on the requisite, deceptively virginal white sheets.
We can't wait for the 'Bad Girlz' smackdown - maybe Vona could referee.
Marquit, Koren Zailckas and Melissa P. can fight to the death, covered
in mud or jello (or maybe they could all just make out). The winner
gets to live to see her 21st birthday.
